Safety first. If anyone is hurt, if vehicles are blocking live traffic, or if there's a risk of fire or fuel leaking, call 911 and follow the directions of police and emergency crews. If you can move the vehicle safely, get it out of travel lanes and switch on your hazard lights. On fast roads like Deerfoot Trail or Stoney Trail, stay well away from traffic. Get behind a barrier or off the road if you can.
Once everyone is safe, take photos of the vehicles, the scene and any damage, swap information with the other driver, and note the location. Alberta's rules on reporting collisions to police depend on things like injuries and how much damage there is, so check with the Calgary Police Service if you aren't sure. Damaged vehicles need care. A bent wheel, a broken suspension part or a crushed bumper can make a vehicle impossible to roll, and pulling it the wrong way can add damage. We usually move collision vehicles on a flatbed. If the vehicle has left the road or ended up in a ditch or median, we can winch it back first with our winching & recovery service. We clear loose debris from the vehicle as part of the job where it's safe to do so.
