Highway and Major-Road Towing in Calgary
Calgary's busiest routes move a lot of traffic at speed, and a breakdown or collision on one of them is more stressful, and more dangerous, than a problem in a quiet residential street. Deerfoot Trail, Stoney Trail, Glenmore Trail and Crowchild Trail carry commuters, trucks and through traffic day and night, and roads such as Macleod Trail, Memorial Drive and 16 Avenue mix fast traffic with busy intersections and businesses.
Dave's Towing Services has towed and helped stranded drivers on these roads since 1992, and we're available 24/7. Choose your road above for local tips, or read the safety steps below.
If You Break Down on a Major Road
- Get off the travel lanes if you can. Steer onto the right shoulder, an exit ramp or a side street. Avoid stopping on a bridge, a curve or in a lane if there's any other option.
- Turn on your hazard lights. At night or in snow, leave your headlights or parking lights on too.
- Stay buckled in. On a busy highway, the safest place is usually inside your vehicle with your seat belt on. Only get out if the vehicle is on fire, filling with smoke or in immediate danger, and then move well away from traffic, behind a barrier if possible.
- Call 911 first if anyone is hurt or the vehicle is blocking traffic in a dangerous spot.
- Call Dave's Towing at 403-272-3944. Tell us the road, your direction of travel, and the nearest exit, interchange, overpass or landmark.
What to Tell Dispatch
- The road and your direction: for example, northbound Deerfoot Trail near an exit
- Which lane or shoulder you're on
- What happened: no-start, flat tire, overheating, collision, out of fuel, in the ditch
- Your vehicle: year, make and model, and whether it's AWD, an EV or lowered
- Whether anyone else is in the vehicle with you, including children or pets
- Where you want the vehicle to go
Tow or Roadside Help?
Not every highway call needs a tow. A flat tire, a dead battery or an empty tank can often be handled with roadside assistance. If the vehicle is damaged, leaking or unsafe to drive, it needs a tow. For most highway calls, especially collisions, AWD vehicles and EVs, flatbed towing is the safest option. If you've slid into a ditch or the median, the vehicle may first need winching. After a collision, see accident towing.
Common Calls on Calgary's Major Roads
- Collisions. After a crash, the vehicle often can't be driven. We tow it to a body shop, your home or a location your insurer chooses.
- Flat tires and blowouts. Potholes in spring and debris on the ring road take out a lot of tires. If it isn't safe to change on the shoulder, we can move the vehicle somewhere safer first.
- No-starts and stalls. Dead batteries, failed alternators and fuel problems can strand a driver in a merge lane or on a ramp.
- Overheating. Long climbs, stop-and-go traffic and summer heat push older cooling systems to the limit. Pull over before the gauge hits the red.
- Ditch slides. Snow and ice send vehicles into ditches and medians every winter, especially on ramps and curves.
- Work vehicles. Pickups, vans and cube vans break down on these roads too, and businesses want them back to work quickly. Our fleet customers can set up invoicing.
Winter on Calgary's Highways
Snow, black ice and chinook melt-and-freeze cycles make ramps, bridges and ring-road interchanges slippery. Keep a winter kit in your vehicle with a blanket, gloves, a scraper, a phone charger and some water. If you slide off the road, stay in the vehicle, keep your hazard lights on, and keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow if you run the engine for heat.
