Okotoks Towing: Hwy 2, Hwy 2A and Foothills Acreages - Dave's Towing Calgary

Okotoks has grown into one of the biggest communities in the Calgary region, and a lot of its residents commute north every day. Between the highway commute, a busy main street and the acreages that surround town in Foothills County, Okotoks generates a wide mix of towing calls. Dave's Towing has been heading south from Calgary to help since 1992. Here's how to get help fast.

Two highways, two kinds of breakdowns

Highway 2 (the QE2)

Most commuters use Highway 2, which joins Calgary's south end. Traffic runs fast, with major interchanges at Highway 7 (for Okotoks), Highway 552 near De Winton, and Highway 22X / Stoney Trail on Calgary's southern edge. Highway breakdowns here usually need a quick response because traffic is moving at highway speed.

If you stall on Highway 2:

  1. Pull onto the right shoulder as far as is safe.
  2. Turn on your hazards.
  3. Stay buckled in the vehicle unless it's unsafe to stay put.
  4. Note the direction you're travelling and the last interchange you passed.

Highway 2A

Highway 2A is the older route. It runs through Okotoks itself and north toward the Calgary city limits, continuing south toward Aldersyde and High River. It has slower speeds, more intersections and more local traffic. Calls here tend to be overheated engines in summer traffic, flats and minor collisions at intersections. If you're near the south end of the route, see our Aldersyde towing page.

The De Winton and 22X corridor

Between Okotoks and Calgary, the De Winton area and the Highway 22X / Stoney Trail junction see a lot of commuter calls, particularly in winter when blowing snow drifts across open fields. Many south Calgary drivers from Mahogany, Seton and Auburn Bay pass through this junction every day too.

Acreages and rural roads around Okotoks

Foothills County is full of acreages, hobby farms and gravel range roads. Rural calls take a little more information:

  • Rural address: the closest township or range road number.
  • Driveway conditions: long, steep, soft in spring, or unplowed.
  • Gates and animals: any locked gates, codes, or livestock to watch for.
  • Vehicle position: in a field, a coulee, or a ditch.

For vehicles stuck in mud, snow or a ditch, our winching and recovery service gets them out in a controlled way.

Moving trailers and equipment

Acreage owners often need a trailer, compact tractor, skid steer or side-by-side moved to a dealer or repair shop in Calgary. We handle light and medium duty loads on our flatbeds. Give us the make and model so we can confirm it fits. See our equipment and trailer transport page.

Common calls inside Okotoks

In town, most calls are the everyday kind:

  • Batteries that won't turn over after a cold night
  • Keys locked in the car at the shopping centres on the north side of town
  • Flat tires
  • Cars that won't start in a garage or parkade

Many of these are solved with roadside assistance on the spot.

Getting your vehicle from Okotoks to a Calgary shop

Plenty of Okotoks drivers want their vehicle at a Calgary dealership, especially the ones along Macleod Trail in the south. A tow north on Highway 2 typically takes 30 to 40 minutes once loaded. Before booking:

  • Call the shop to confirm they can take the vehicle and where to leave the keys.
  • Ask about after-hours drop-off.
  • If it's an insurance claim, confirm which body shop the insurer wants.

We'll use a flatbed for AWD and 4x4 vehicles, collision damage, and vehicles that won't roll.

Chinook weather and Okotoks driving

Okotoks gets some of the strongest chinooks in the region. A warm afternoon can melt everything, and a hard freeze that night turns it to ice by morning. On those mornings, slow down on bridge decks and overpasses, which freeze first. Leave extra room on Highway 2A where traffic stops and starts.
